Sugary drinks
Regularly drinking soda, sweetened coffee drinks, juice, or sweet tea as a default beverage.
Is sugary drinks a bad habit?
Yes. Liquid sugar is arguably the single worst common dietary habit, because drinks deliver large sugar doses with zero fullness. Your body barely registers liquid calories, so a daily soda habit adds a dessert's worth of sugar on top of everything you eat.

Do you have the sugary drinks habit?
Why sugary drinks works against you
- ◆Liquid calories don't trigger fullness, so sugary drinks add to your intake instead of replacing any of it.
- ◆Regular sugar washes over your teeth all day feed decay more effectively than most foods.
- ◆Daily sugary drinks are strongly linked to weight gain and long-term metabolic problems like type 2 diabetes.
How to break it
- 1
Step down the sweetness gradually
Going straight to plain water usually fails. Move stepwise: half-sweet orders, then diet versions or sparkling water with fruit, then plain. Your palate adjusts at each stage within a couple of weeks.
- 2
Change what's cold and ready
You drink what's within reach. Stop stocking soda at home, keep a filled water bottle and cold sparkling water in front at the fridge, and the default switches almost by itself.
- 3
Find your one trigger moment
Most people have a specific slot: lunch, the 3 p.m. slump, the gas station stop. Pre-decide the replacement for that exact moment, because that's the whole battle.
Do this instead
When you'd normally grab a soda, reach for sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea. Keep it cold and closer than the sugary option.
Timeline: Most people stop missing sugary drinks within three to four weeks; heavily sweetened drinks often start tasting syrupy after a month or two away.
Communities that help
Peer support measurably improves quit rates. These unofficial communities are well-moderated places to not do this alone:

Breaking a habit sticks when you track the replacement.
Decide what you'll do instead of sugary drinks, then track it daily. A visible streak turns one good decision into a system.
