Sleeping in on weekends
Sleeping hours later on weekends than on weekdays.
Is sleeping in on weekends a bad habit?
It depends on the size of the swing. An extra hour is harmless recovery; sleeping until noon after 6:30 a.m. weekdays gives your body clock a twice-weekly time-zone shift, often called social jet lag, which is a big reason Monday mornings feel brutal.
How common is sleeping in on weekends?
Do you have the sleeping in on weekends habit?
Why sleeping in on weekends works against you
- ◆Large weekend shifts lag your body clock, making Sunday-night sleep hard and Monday morning feel like a red-eye landing.
- ◆Regularly needing multi-hour weekend catch-up is evidence your weekday nights are chronically short.
- ◆Sleeping to noon wipes out the weekend mornings you were presumably trying to enjoy.
How to break it
- 1
Cap the drift at one hour
Keep weekend wake-ups within about an hour of weekdays. You still get extra rest, but your body clock stays in one time zone. Sunday night and Monday morning improve almost immediately.
- 2
Recover with a nap, not a lie-in
If you're genuinely short on sleep, get up near your normal time and take an early-afternoon nap instead. You repay sleep debt without dragging your schedule two hours later.
- 3
Fix the weekday shortage it's compensating for
Massive weekend sleep is usually the bill for short weekday nights. Moving weekday bedtime 30 minutes earlier shrinks the debt so weekends stop needing to be repayment plans.
Do this instead
Get up within an hour of your weekday time, enjoy the morning, and take a short afternoon nap if you need extra recovery.
Timeline: Sunday-night sleep and Monday mornings typically improve within two to three weekends of capping the drift.

Sleep schedules, sleep hygiene, and fixing broken nights
Breaking a habit sticks when you track the replacement.
Decide what you'll do instead of sleeping in on weekends, then track it daily. A visible streak turns one good decision into a system.
