Skipping sunscreen
Going without sun protection on exposed skin, even on ordinary days.
Is skipping sunscreen a bad habit?
Yes. UV exposure is cumulative, and it's the leading driver of skin aging and a major risk factor for skin cancer. Daily sunscreen on exposed skin is one of the cheapest, most evidence-backed health habits available, and clouds or cool weather don't grant a day off.
How common is skipping sunscreen?
Do you have the skipping sunscreen habit?
Why skipping sunscreen works against you
- ◆UV damage accumulates over a lifetime and raises skin cancer risk, including from routine everyday exposure, not just beach days.
- ◆Sun exposure is the biggest external driver of visible skin aging: wrinkles, spots, and lost elasticity.
- ◆UVA rays pass through clouds and car windows, so skipping protection on 'gray days' still adds to the tally.
How to break it
- 1
Stack it onto brushing your teeth
Keep a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ next to your toothbrush and apply it to your face right after brushing every morning. Tying it to an existing daily anchor makes it automatic within weeks.
- 2
Find a formula you don't hate
Most people skip sunscreen because they hate the feel. Try a few (lightweight, gel, or a moisturizer with SPF built in) until one feels like nothing, then buy multiples.
- 3
Stage backups where you forget
Keep a spare in your bag, car, and desk so being away from home never becomes the excuse. Reapply when you're outside for long stretches, especially around water or sweat.
Do this instead
When you finish your morning face-wash or tooth-brushing, apply SPF before anything else. It's part of getting dressed, not an extra step.
Timeline: Stacked onto an existing morning routine, daily sunscreen typically becomes automatic within a few weeks to two months.

Accountability and habit-building for health basics
Breaking a habit sticks when you track the replacement.
Decide what you'll do instead of skipping sunscreen, then track it daily. A visible streak turns one good decision into a system.
